Google Pixel 8 Pro has a big problem. Between disappointing camera performance, missing features, and annoying quirks, Google's new flagship is half-baked at best and definitely not ready to hit stores on October 12.
CNET editors spent the last few days testing several models. The 8 Pro is on sale in the UK and US and we were surprised by what we found. The biggest problem is the camera, which can create image-distorting artifacts at high contrast.
The phone's DNG raw images, which typically contain all the detail the Pixel 8 Pro camera can capture, are for the first time incompatible with the new editor, including Lightroom on the device and Photoshop on the desktop. Google has released a last-minute update to the issue that only applies to newly imported images (our previous DNG test was pretty dead). But the DNG archive is still more confusing and noisy than we expected from the original file.
Major new features such as night video will not be available at launch. The new AI tools, including new call screens and endings, are available in the US but not in the UK, where I tested them. Both points were discussed extensively in CNET's Pixel 8 review.
It's rare to see a clear issue from a major manufacturer this close to a device's launch, and it's disappointing to see this on a phone we had high hopes for.
